Division
Lower respiratory system
includes the bronchi, the trachea, the bronchioles and the alveoli
Upper respiratory system
includes the nose, pharynx and the larynx
Larynx
When swallowing food, a cartilaginous structure called the epiglottis stops it from entering the larynx.

Bronchi and bronchioles
The two tubes leading from the trachea as it first branches are called bronchi. The narrowed tubes arising from further branching are the bronchioles.
Trachea
Rings of cartilage inside the walls of this flexible air passageway help to keep it open at all times.

Alveoli
These small, thin-walled air sacs are found at the end of each of the smallest bronchioles. Each one is surrounded by many capillaries.
