Properties of water
Adhesion
Water molecules stick to other surfaces, causing the other surfaces to become wet.
this is caused by the hydrogen bonds, which form a longer and weaker force of attraction between the molecules and the surfaces.
Cohesion
Water molecules stick to other water molecules, keeping the liquid together.
This is also caused by the hydrogen bonds between molecules.
This causes surface tension which is seen when pond skaters skate on ice
-
Solvent
As the water is polar, water can dissolve a wide range of both ionic and polar substances.
Liquid
Water is a liquid at most temperatures, meaning it can transport materials around living things.
-
Thermal internia
A body of water stays at o fairly constant temperature as the specific latent heat is so high.
This is essential for life
Density
Water when frozen floats on water, this is because it is less dense as ice. This also creates a new habitat in the arctic. The icy layer forms to protect the water beneath from freezing too, protecting the aquatic wildlife, such as fish.
Water is densest at 4 degrees c, meaning the bottom of the ocean is a constant 4 degrees c.
Transparency
Water is clear, meaning light to travel through it so fish and aquatic life can see underwater.
It also means that the aquatic plants can photosynthesise underwater.
