Winston years before, read a news about that some revolutionaries committed treason in New York but he saw them that day in the coffee shop
Winston realizes that the party is modifying the real stories. The party is lying to the people for their convenience.
Winston hears on the telescreen that the BB helped to improve the quality of life, eradicated famine, robberies etc.
Consequently, he goes to the proles neighborhood and talks with an old man, asking him how was life before the revolution, if before big brother it was better than now.
Winston watches on the telescreen the announcement of an increase in the chocolate ration, when the last day he heared that there will be a reduction.
Therefore, he starts to wonder if he was the only one who kept his memory about last events.
Winston arrives at his apartment and sits in a corner and he notices that the telescreen can´t see him
Hence, he decides to write a diary, in which he writes about his opinions of Big Brother, how people are not free, that if there is hope, it lies in the proles and that Winston does not support BB

The work of the Ministry of truth consists of replacing original movies, books, fields, newspapers with new ones changing numbers (figures), data, etc
Taking into account that, Winston wonders if Oceania has always been like that, but he can’t remember because big brother and the ministry of truth have changed the history
When Winston goes to the antique shop at the Proles' neighborhoods, he remembers that there he had bought his diary.
He talks with Mr. Charrington, the shop owner, who gives some information to Winston about those old things.
Winston is more and more interested about the past, before the revolution of BB.
