EXAMPLES/SCENARIO ON STAGES OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
PRE OPERATIONAL STAGES
For example, a researcher might take a lump of clay, divide it into two equal pieces, and then give a child the choice between two pieces of clay to play with. One piece of clay is rolled into a compact ball while the other is smashed into a flat pancake shape. Since the flat shape looks larger, the preoperational child will likely choose that piece even though the two pieces are exactly the same size.
CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE
For example, they begin to understand the concept of conservation; that the amount of liquid in a short, wide cup is equal to that in a tall, skinny glass
Begin to understand that their thoughts are unique to them and that not everyone else necessarily shares their thoughts, feelings, and opinions.
SENSORYMOTOR STAGE
Birth to one-month old
Innate reflexes such as sucking, gripping, and touching
One to four-months of age
Repeating reflexive behaviors in response to pleasure experienced by the action
place a novel object into their mouth, the infant may need to open their mouth wider
Five to eight months of age
Begin to recreate pleasurable experiences and form habits as a result
enjoy toys that engage their intuitive nature by reacting to their actions
Eight to twelve months
Begin to understand “object permanence”
Begin to differentiate between an object and the activity associated with that object
Begin to display particular behaviors to elicit a known reaction.
The infant will not just shake the rattle, but will reach out and knock to one side an object that stands in the way of it getting hold of the rattle.
Twelve to eighteen months
Engage in similar actions with slight deviations
infants may throw a ball, and then throw a spoon, and then throw their food to gauge the consequence of that action.
Eighteen to twenty-four months
Infants begin to pretend during their play and develop symbolic thought
