Its unincorporated metropolitan area has a very dynamic economy based on ecotourism, gastronomy, industry and commerce. It is one of the Colombian conurbations not yet official, but existing de facto in the north of the department of Huila. Its satellite municipalities are Rivera, Palermo, Tello, Baraya, Aipe, Villavieja and Campoalegre. It has 488,927 inhabitants.
