Guidelines for Frontline Health Care Staff Safety for COVID-19
Background
An informal telephone survey interviewing emergency department physicians was conducted from March 30, 2020 until April 17, 2020.
:pencil2: Over 100 health care facilities in both urban and rural areas across the United States were surveyed.
:warning: None of these facilities had an adequate written plan in use or a consistent approach for health care staff safety regarding COVID-19.
Purpose: To provide guidelines for the minimum necessary protection that physicians, nurses, allied health care and facility staff should be provided with against SARS-CoV-2. infection
Identification (ID)
:check: Clean ID badges (covered in plastic or lami-nation coatings) with disinfectant wipes or alcohol daily
Cell Phones
:check: Cell phones and cell phone covers should be cleaned at least once daily advisably after a shift
:check: Use disinfectant wipes/ cleaning wipes/ damp microfiber cloth
Nonessential Wear
:red_cross: Jewelry, watches, and other nonessential wear that is not covered by clothing.
Personal Hygiene
:check: From head to toe - Shower with soap and warm water.
:check: Head or hair coverings - Disposed of or washed daily.
:check: Facility-approved PPE (or Scrubs and a white coat )
:check: long sleeved garments, closed with zipper or button up closures
Preshift Clothing
:check: Laundered in hot water (all cycles), with detergent, bleach, and dried in an electric or gas dryer.
Hand Washing
:check: Wash both hands and all fingers with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds ("Happy Birthday" song twice)
:check: Alcohol-based hand cleanser
:check: Moisturizer after washing
Protective Eye Coverings
:check: Goggles and face shields
:green_cross: Discourage wearing contact lens in cold or flu-like signs
Doffing PPE
The entire PPE uniform should be placed in appropriate receptacles prior to leaving the health care facility

Postshift Hygiene
health care workers will retire directly to the facility shower room
After doffing and properly stowing travel clothes, go directly to a shower washing from head to toe with soap and warm water.
Footwear
:check: clean all surfaces of the footwear (including soles and heels) with disinfectant spray or wipes.
:check: bagged in plastic or paper

Coveralls
Coverall removal training important to prevent self-contamination of fabric coming into contact with the face.
SARS-CoV-2 Testing
:star: Tested initially for the antigen of SARS-CoV-2
:star: subs-quently every 3 days throughout the pandemic
Contact With Blood, Stool, or Other Body Fluids
:check: Replace the PPE or protective clothing and clean the area(s) of exposed skin with soap and warm water for 20 seconds.

:check: Hang used respirators (designated storage area or clean, breathable container )
