What are some signs of a struggling student?
Behavioral
Violence
Fighting with students, teacher or other adults in school
Consistent trouble following instructions
Stealing, cheating, or other concerning occurences
NEXT STEP
IF NONVIOLENT - Address within classroom - student may lose privileges, receive failing grade on assignment, redo assignments, other classroom management techniques
Success!
IF VIOLENCE IS INVOLVED
Involve principal, parents, and Student Support Team --> SST can create plan to address behavior or determine if the student should change classes or school
Social/Emotional
Frequent crying or emotional outbursts
Trouble controlling anger
Complaints about bullying
Trouble working in groups
Feelings of isolation
Visible stress in class
NEXT STEP
Talk to student to help identify what feelings they're having and where stress might be coming from
Employ differentiation tactics to reduce classroom stress or social pressures from other students
Work with all students in the class on empathy and creating a safe classroom environment
Recommend for student counseling or SST
Talk with parents to see if it could stem from home life
Academic
Trouble completing work on time
Low scores or failing grades
Low benchmark testing or lack of improvement
Consistent trouble focusing
Clear problems with language visible from speaking, reading, or writing
NEXT STEP
Meeting with student and parents
Could there be a learning disability involved?
Talk with parents to see if there has been previous diagnosis
Recommend psychologist or KidsPlus (organization in Chiang Mai to address students with extra needs and reduce stigmas)
Talk with SST team to help monitor students across all subjects, identify root of problem, and place on academic plan
Could it stem from social or emotional stress?
Does it stem from low English abilities or trouble reading and writing?
Continue to monitor student through benchmark testing
Recommend outside tutoring
Employ reading programs to improve comprehension and monitor reading level
Employ differentiation techniques within classroom to improve language skills
