Chapter 2: Subjects Matter
Reading is an active and Constructive process. For me, this means taking notes and annotating as I read.
Prior knowledge plays a large role when it comes to a students comprehension capability.
Teaching students to dig deeper than surface-level reading.
By teaching kids proper reading approaches and techniques, they can excel in all subject readings.
Reading steps may be hard to change because of what we are used to and have been doing subconsciously this whole time.
Literacy in the ELA Classroom
Technology within Literacy
Technology has completely changed the English classroom. Students used to have to read a bunch for their research and now it is pretty much one click away.
Communication
Communication within English can mean a number of things. It could be when you are doing peer revisions and that requires listening to whomever is giving you the feedback, and putting it to proper use.
Discipline in Literacy
This reminds me more of the idea of active reading. Taking notes and making annotations, plus asking questions is important throughout this process.
Disciplinary Literacy in the Language arts classroom.
When students of English write, they
adapt communication for various audiences
Avoid bias
Utilize a process
Ask for and utilize feedback
Avoid generic and formulaic writing. Basically avoid stereotypical academic writing and try to make it your own.
When students of English think, they
Make connections
Listen to others
Ask questions
When students of English read, they
Understand Perspective
Recognize bias
Make connections
Identify underlying messages
Question through critical Lenses
Find meaning through literary techniques
Connections between the readings
All three readings focused on effective reading strategies. Such as taking notes and doing annotations. I always found it helpful to think of any questions as I read and I would write them in the margins.
It's easy to just read what you are assigned and not truly retain it or just retain it for the time being. These chapters wanted to reconstruct how we think of reading and what strategies we could utilize.
Encourages readers to think critically.
