Learning Activities:
Lesson 1: Students will investigate their self identity and what makes them an individual by first watching a youtube video and then creating a mind map. Students will share some of their differences in a class discussion, initiation the group discussion of how everybody has different things that make them unique. (PD2.1)
Lesson 2: Students will creative an artwork that reflects the aspects of their identity. They will be required to complete half a self portrait using coloured pencils and complete the other half by cutting out images from magazines, (referring to an example artwork), that reflect their identity and completing the portrait. (VAS 2.1)
Lesson 3: Students will investigate the idea of cultural identity through brainstorming what comes to mind when they think of Australia/ians. Students will also discuss how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is integrated throughout the Australian identity and the importance of preserving traditional cultural methods and practices. (PD2.3)
Lesson 4: A local Aboriginal elder will model to the students different types of traditional Aboriginal painting techniques, (eg: dot painting). Students must then choose one of the traditional methods and choose one animal in which to create their own artwork. Students artworks will then be displayed in a presentation setting where they will then complete a peer assessment on each others work. (VAS2.2, VAS2.4)

A local Aboriginal Elder, they will assist students in the creation of their artwork by demonstrating how to correctly use the painting technique. They will also bring in the traditional painting materials and show the students how they are mixed in order to create paint.

Formative:
Students will be assessed throughout the course of unit on their ability to explore and discuss what creates a person/cultures identity
Students will investigate and discuss aspects of the Australian Aboriginal Culture and the importance of recognising and respecting cultural difference
Students will demonstrate their understanding of self identity through the creation of a self portrait/collage
Peer Assessment
Students will be peer assessed on their ability to assess peers artwork based on the guidelines to demonstrate Indigenous visual art techniques

Learning Intentions
Throughout the course of this unit students will be exploring and demonstrating their knowledge and learning through investigation the concept of self identity and cultural identity. Students will also explore the differences in cultures and the importance of being accepting towards others in all aspects of life. Students will engage in traditional Aboriginal cultural painting techniques to further understand and appreciate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural identity
