Important events
1st event:Jurgis and Ona think about marrying, but they are unable to pay for a traditional wedding feast the older folks are insisting.
4th event: Grandmother Majauzskiene is a socialist, Jurgis does not understand what the word Socialist means.
2nd event: Ona suggest getting a job, but Jurgis disagrees with the idea. They start to get settled in to their new home, they meet a Lithuanian women and her grown son(the Majauzskienes). The women begins to tells then horror stories about the home they recently moved into.
5th event: Grandma Majauzskiene then informs Jurgis and Ona that they'd have to pay interest on the house payments as well; which breaks their hearts a tremendous amount. It is more than half of their monthly pay that they receive.
3rd event: The Majauzskienes inform Jurgis and Ona on the recently passed labor laws, barring children under 16 from working, and how families create false paperwork to have their children work in the factories.
6th event: Ona must find a job, and tiny Stanislovas, one of Elzbieta's children, must get false papers(only of age 13) and work also. Ona receives a job and she must wrap and sew hams. Ona gets 10 dollars for the job. Stanislovas obtains the false papers saying he is 16 years of age and starts to work at setting empty lard cans under a lard spout. He makes five cents an hour, and this allows them to do their payments.

Summary
The author is explaining and showing the cruelties of the slaughter/packing buisness. The author is showing how people need to lie about their ages and create false paperwork saying you are 16 to be able to get a job.
