Assessments
Summative
Definition: Summative assessment usually covers a large portion of information. Varied question types are used and it is important for students to be taught test taking strategies.
Example 1: Unit Test- Given to students after a bigger chunk of information is taught. Unit tests can incorporate a wide variety of questions and skill sets like matching, true/false, and open ended response.
Example 2: Research Project- Students are given a subject to research and they select a more specific concept within that subject. Research projects can be done individually or in groups.
Interim/Benchmark
Example 1: STAAR- A year end test that measures of a student is below, at, or above grade level.
Example 2: MAPS: MAPS testing is an assessment taken in Reading, Language, and Math

Formative
Example 1: Class Discussion- This can be used as a formative assessment by asking the entire class questions to review the lesson. If responses are accurate and there is active participation, lesson adjustments aren't needed.
Example 2: Kahoot Game- A Kahoot game is a fun way to implement questions for formative assessment, but also allow the students to have a competition and see where they stand with the topic.
Definition: Provides feedback on student learning and also allows for adjustment of instruction. Within the classroom, this is typically viewed as the more informal of assesments.
Performance
Example 1: Portfolios- A portfolio can be used to compile a students work over a school year that gives their next teacher an idea of their work habits and struggles.
Example 2: Group Projects- The class is broken into groups and each member is responsible for making contributions to the content.
Definition: Students are given various tasks that all contribute to a larger means of presenting information.
Diagnostic
Example 1: Running Records- A running record can be used as a periodic check of the students developing reading fluency.
Example 2: K-W-L Chart- This can be used as a writing activity that implements what the student already knows, what they want to know about the topic, and finally what they learned by the end of the lesson.
Definition: Assessments used to measure where students are at in the beginning of a course. These assessments can also be used to determine the pace and structure of lessons.
