Formative
An assessment done during the instructional process for the purpose of improving teaching and or learning. The teacher provides feedback and gathers information and evidence of student learning.
Creating graphic organizers over a topic that is being taught in class. EX: food chains, ecosystems, math story problems
Exit slip: Giving students a sticky note and asking them to answer a question and write down their response to see if they understood the objective of the day
Summative
Summative Assessments are given at the end of a unit or 9 weeks to asses and evaluate what the students know about the content taught to them.

Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessments are pre-assessments that teachers use to evaluate students strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before teaching lesson or unit.

Word list reading and Spelling inventory: tests sight words and if the student can spell common words.

Interim/Benchmark
Interim/benchmark assessments are used to evaluate where students are in the learning progress and to determine whether they are on track to performing well on future standardized tests.
