Formative
Definition: A way of gathering evidence of student learning. It can be formal or informal. This assessment allows teachers to determine what students know/don't know and adjust instruction accordingly.

Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: A type of formative assessment. It is periodic testing that occurs throughout the school year that is more formal and includes little/no student feedback.

Summative
Definition: An assessment given at the end of a unit used to determine student mastery and understanding of a certain subject. Student data is collected and compared against one another.

Performance
Definition: A type of authentic assessment that allows students to demonstrate mastery/understanding by completing a task of project. It measures how well students can apply the skills that they have learned.

Diagnostic
Definition: A type of assessment that informs the teacher of student achievement gaps and other academic abilities. They should be given at the beginning of a unit and can be used to help plan future lessons.
