Assessments
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given to students at the end of a unit/module to test their knowledge on the topic(s)/skill(s) that were taught. The data from these exams can give teachers an idea of what might need to be retaught.
End of unit exam: A tests can be given over all the skills and content that students needed to gain from a unit.
Final Project: Students can complete a project or make something that requires them to display and use knowledge that was gained after a unit.

Formative
Definition: Formative assessments test students on what prior knowledge they have about a topic/skill that is about to be taught. The data collected from formative assessments can guide teachers in designing their lessons based on what students already know.
Exit Ticket: Students can fill out one thing they know about a given topic and one thing they have a question about on a sticky note. Then on their way out of the classroom they can stick it to the door.
Kahoot Quiz: Students can participate in a Kahoot quiz online where they answer questions choose by the teacher. Once the quiz is complete the teacher will automatically have data on who missed what.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim and benchmark assessments are given in intervals to track students progress through out then year and compare their performance to their grade level standards.
STAAR: A state wide test administered to students to see how they align to the standards expected of students their age.
iStation: iStation is an online reading program that tests students reading ability monthly over different literacy components and compares their score the the majority of students who also have taken the exam.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to display what they know through completing a task rather than answering questions.
Debate/seminar: Students debate over a topic they learned in which they will have to use facts, examples and academic vocabulary.
Play: Students work together in groups to generate a script and act out a scenario in which the content they learned is being acted out/re-told.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are given to students before new material is taught to identify their strengths, weaknesses or misconceptions.
Running Record: Students read a text selected for them then read aloud to the teacher so mistakes, corrections and fluency can be marked to see their overall reading ability.
Alphabet Assessment: Students are asked to give letter names and the sound they make for each letter in the alphabet both capital and lowercase to test alphabetic knowledge.
