H.O.T. Questions
Guiding questions:
- We see in the story that these kids are kind of being bullies, have you ever seen or experienced bullying yourself? How did it make you feel?
- How do you think this makes the main character feel based off of what you just read?
Closing questions:
- After reading the story can anyone retell the story to a classmate who has not read the book themselves?
- Can anyone tell me what the problem was in the book and how they solved it?
Opening questions:
- By looking at the cover, what do you think this book is going to be about?
- Where do you think the setting of this book is going to take place by looking at the illustrations before reading?
Formative Assessment: a way of assessing students knowledge through formal and informal assessments with the purpose of gathering evidence of student learning and feedback for the teacher to adjust instruction if needed.
Informal assessments - observation
teacher will walk around the room while students are solving math problems to assess their thought process and problem solving strategies throughout the lesson.
Formal assessments - Quizzes
Teacher will assess students knowledge of the lesson by giving students an exit-ticket which they will complete after the lesson and must complete it before leaving class to gauge what needs to be retaught and what students have already mastered as well as any misconceptions students may have.
Interm/Benchmarked: These assessments are planned and intended to report student progress based on a standardized grading system to the district in which it will give feedback based off of student performance showing the effectiveness of the curriculum and instruction being used in the classroom.
STAAR test: This is a state mandated stardardized test based on state wide standards and curriculum which stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.
District assessments: these are assessments mandated by the district based on district wide curriculum which are usually administered every 6-9 weeks. This shows student progress as well as assesses the effectiveness of instruction based on district standards.
Summative: These are assessments which are intended to evaluate a larger sum of learning after teaching an entire unit which usually hold a higher value and are always on a grade point scale.
Mid-terms and Final Exams: These are exams given to assess student knowledge which is learned over a large period of time.
Essays: These are written assignments usually based on a common prompt which students are required to answer based on what they have learned over a large span of time or the entirety of a unit and research.
Diagnostic: These are forms of assessments which determine students strengths and weaknesses prior to teaching a lesson. This is a way for teachers to know if they need to make any adjustments to the lesson whether thats making it more in-depth and challenging or breaking it down or needing to review prior knowledge that may be built on in the lesson.
High Frequency words test: This is a list of high frequency words which change every 9 weeks to go along with reading curriculum. By the end of each 9 weeks, students are expected to be able to read most all of the words fluently aloud to show mastery of vocabulary for that grading period.
Making a KWL chart: This helps students visually organize their thoughts, learnings and misconceptions in a chart which consists of the 3 categories; Know, Want to know, and Learned
Perfomance: This is a form of assessment which students are expected to perform a task in order to show mastery of a certain skill, unit or lesson.
Chapter or concept retell: students are expected to be able to recall and explain what they learned to show comprehension of what has been taught.
Presentation: Students create and present a topic based on their knowledge, creativity and learned skills.
