Aphthous Ulcer

Presentation

Found on: lip, cheeks, floor of the mouth, sulci, or ventrum of the tongue.

Minor: 2-4 mm diameter (up to x6)
Major: 1 cm or larger (up to x6)
Herpetiform aphthous: 1-2 mm (up to x100)

Heal in 7-10 days

Recur 1-4 monthly

Causes

Genetic

Smoking cessation

Iron, folic acid B12 deficiency

Local trauma ?dental

Food intolerances

Stress/anxiety

Differential disgnosis

Oral herpes

Drug reactions

Oral malignancy

Chicken Pox

Hand foot and Mouth

Management

Treat reversible underlying condition

Avoid trigger factors including trauma

If mild- No treatment required

hydrocortisone oro-mucosal tablets

anaesthetics such as lidocaine

topical analgesic/anti-inflammatory agents such as benzydamine

topical antimicrobial agents such as chlorhexidine gluconate oral solution, or doxycycline rinses.
