3rd-5th Grade Pre-assessment on reading the staff
Group 2: Students who have some knowledge of the topic
In pairs, students will be given a piece of music to learn on the
Orff xylophones
. It will contain all of the notes included in the quiz. They will then be asked to label the notes below the staff
There will be two more songs to choose from, if and when a student completes this portion of the assignment
Group 3: Students who answered the most questions correctly
Students will be asked to take their chrome books to a station in the room. They will be given the option to complete at least one ed puzzle, from a list of five. The topics will include: dynamics and new musical symbols, instrument families, composers of classical music, a video on basics of piano and a video on basics of ukulele.
If and when a student finishes one edpuzzle, They may choose another video
Group 1: Students who are struggling with the topic
Review activity - We will review the musical alphabet, Every Good Boy Does Fine and FACE, and we will begin 1st round of flashcard style answering. Students will write answers on cards and display them when asked. There will be a cheat sheet on the table.
Round 2: Cheat sheet will be flipped over, students who answer 5 correctly will advance to round 3
Round 3: Students will be handed a worksheet with a riddle. The riddle uses the musical alphabet to spell words. When all words have been spelled correctly, the riddle is solved. This may be used as further assessment evidence
ELL students
Based on their level of English proficiency and understanding of the unit material, ELL students may be given one of several activities to complete, or may join one of the other groups
If a student has some working English skills, but needs help figuring out notes on the staff, they may join me in Group 1.
ELL students who are able to read notes on the staff may join group 2 with a set of instructions translated into their native language. If another student also speaks the same language, they may be paired up or work in a group of 3
ELL students who need help understanding notes of the staff may complete one of two activities based on their Level of English
For the students who have little to no English proficiency, They may watch a YouTube video explaining notes on the staff either in their native language or using the auto-translate feature
If a YouTube video is unavailable in their native language, they may complete a worksheet that details the notes on the staff and is translated into their native language. This activity will use as many pictures as possible, rather than words
Students with Special Needs
Students who need help understanding the unit material may watch an Edpuzzle that is tailored to the level of the student, or join me in group 1
Students who have some understanding of the material may watch an ed puzzle video tailored to the level of the student, or join group 2
