Kaupapa Maori Principles
Tino Rangatiratanga: autonomy, control, self-determination and independence- student agency, values/interests/passions
Taonga Tuku Iho: Validity of a Maori way of knowing, understanding and doing- Te Reo, tikanga, matauranga maori- in classroom context to create safe and respectful environments
Whanau: relationships to one another and world around us- importance of these connections, identity, teacher as nurturer, links to whakapapa which affects student internal values.
Ako: reciprocal- teaching and learning unique to Maori, relevant contexts for learning in Aotearoa.
Te Tiriti O Waitangi: Treaty- citizenship, partnership, empathy and understanding of others and of our heritage in Aotearoa.
Ata: Creating respectful relationships- between teachers and learners, peers, teachers and whanau, learners and whanau.
