Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are a way for teachers to see how well their students are understanding the content with "low stakes." Students can show what they know while teachers can see what misconceptions the students are having and address them early.
Summarizing Exit Ticket- Students will briefly describe what they learned in class. They will include the learning goal for the day and what ideas stood out to them. They can also include topics that they are still struggling with or topics that came easy to them.
In-Class Discussion- Teachers can see how their students are grasping a concept when they have a class discussion about the content. The teacher can ask guiding questions and let the students take over the conversation, then the teacher can act as the moderator.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are how teachers can evaluate their student's knowledge over a unit. These assessments weigh heavily on grades and usually cover more content.
Cumulative Reviews- We use cumulative reviews as a way to review content from the previous week and continue to build in spiraled content from previous weeks. Cumulative reviews can help students recall their prior knowledge and what they have just learned in the recent week.
Unit Tests- Unit tests are held at the end of a unit to test students on skills they learned within a unit. These are also ways to break up the content to make it less of a load for the students. Unit tests can also be referred to later in the year when preparing for STAAR, because it will cover condensed content that they learned in the units leading up to STAAR.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are a form of evaluation for teachers to see where their students are at in the content. Teachers can pinpoint strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between to adjust and support the lessons.
Pretest- Teachers can give a pretest before starting a new unit to get a better understanding of what the students need to focus on and what the students are already strong in.
KWL Chart- KWL charts can give students the opportunity to share information that they already know on a topic, such as graphs and lines. Then, they can share what they want to know, like what is slope and how do you find it. Finally, they are given a chance to share what they have learned. This gives the teacher insight of what the students know before the lesson and what they have learned or still need help with.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Benchmarks are used to measure progress against certain standards. Schools are able to hold teachers accountable by assessing how students perform on each standard and can make adjustments.
District Assessments- District assessments are provided by the school district with content that has been planned out for each area. Teachers use this as a way to plan adjustments for upcoming units and to stay on track to prepare for the STAAR.
STAAR Testing- STAAR is the assessment that covers all content and standards that were taught for the year. The year was spent preparing the students to take this assessment that would cover everything the learned from the beginning of the year until the end.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are assessments based on student creations. Students make their own creations, giving teachers a more clear view of what they know and what they are having misconceptions with. They are not able to guess the right answer from a multiple choice.
Create your own word problem- This gives students the task of creating a word problem involving the specific items that they have learned to identify in the lesson.
One Pagers- One pagers are meant for students to dump what they deem to be the most important information, or takeaway of a topic on a page using pictures and descriptions. This gives the students to get creative and show what they know.
