ADHD
-
Significant and chronic deficits in certain areas such as: inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsions
Inattention - Difficulty focusing and maintaining attention on assigned tasks, especially when appealing alternatives are available. They may have trouble listening to and following directions, and they may make careless mistakes
Impulsivity: Students almost invariably have trouble inhibiting inappropriate behaviors. They may blurt out answers, begin assignments prematurely, or engage in risky or destructive behaviors without thinking about potential consequences.
Hyperactivity: Students may seem to have an excess amount of energy. They're apt to be fidgety and may move around the classroom at inappropriate times.
In the U.S., approximately 6.4 million students are diagnosed at some point in time
-
Contributing factors to the increase are due to the the greater awareness of the disorder and thus resulting in more frequent diagnoses
-
-
An inability to to inhibit inappropriate thoughts, inappropriate actions, or both
Appears to be the result of brain abnormalities that limit students' ability to focus their attention and control their behaviors
-
Sometimes these abnormalities are inherited, but sometimes, instead, they're the result of toxic substances in children's early environments-perhaps high lead content in the paint dust of old buildings
