Why it may be difficult to fail a student
Competence
Lack of knowledge about the student.
Mentor hasn't spent enough time with the student.
Mentor may not have fulfilled their role and responsibilities as a mentor.
Fear of being labelled a "bad mentor"
Self doubt about role as mentor.
Lack of documentation or proof as to why the student should fail.
Lack of confidence or assertiveness.
Unsure of correct procedure or paperwork to fail a student.
Incompetent as a mentor.
Emotions
Fear of confrontation or conflict with the student.
Don't want to upset the student because I like them.
It's too awkward and will be easier if I just pass the student.
I don't feel confident about dealing with this situation.
I'm not sure if it is fair or the right thing to do.
Guilt that I could end/stop someone's nursing career
I feel overwhelmed by the responsibility.
The student is trying their best so give them the benefit of the doubt.
Support
Lack of time to spend with student.
