Definitions of an Empire
Not only about 1 central power, but also about the interconnected relationships between each empire through trade.
Empires take over a large territory of multiple societies by military force and then use there resources in trade and for self-use.
A large society of different culture and lands that are controlled by one central person. This central person(emperor), then controls his intermediaries that control small parts of land from his large empire.

Ottomans
A millet was a self governing non-muslim community in the Ottoman empire who couldmake there own rules and laws.
By making millets, it enabled thes non-muslims to have religion. Due to this religious freedom, there was little to no rebellion which helped maintain the Ottomans' power without weakening it.
The Devshrime system took Christian boys from their families as a form of tax and then these boys were trained and educated from a young age to becom soldiers and servants.
By having soldiers trained from such a young age to be smart, powerful, and strong, it helped the Ottomans have one the the strongest armies in the world at the time, preventing the chance of another empire taking them over.
Janissaries were an elite military force in the Ottoman empire that were drafted from the devishirme system , that was able to keep everyone in the Ottomzn empire in line as well as keep control of the Ottomans land.
This helped the Ottomans keep power because with a military force so strong, they couldn’t he invaded. Also, if the Sultan got out of hand, they were able to put him back in line by executing him or kicking him out of office to avoid rebellions. But by making the Janissaries so strong it almost gave them too much power.
Fracture was the law that allowed the prince that claimed the crown, to execute all of his brothers in order to threaten the Sultan. These brothers could be used by the Janissaries to help them gain more power.
This rule helped the Ottomans because they were wearable to thin each generation to a single heir to prevent hereditary aristocracy, and. help keep peace throughout the Empire.
