MOONLIGHT SONATA ( sonata for piano in C minor, Op. 27, No. 2 - 1801 )
-
in this sonata Beethoven exposed the musical material in a completely new way - he hinted at greater freedoms in the design of the movement - instead of a quick first movement, the sonata begins at a slow pace
is dedicated to Giulietta Guicciardi, one of the women with whom the great artist was unhappily in love, and this sonata is a reflection of his enthusiasm and emotional warmth
-
The first movement, at a slow tempo, represents an atmosphere of infinite tenderness, a quiet dreaming that has nothing in common with the usual sonata allegro
without exaggeration it could be said that this peculiar movement is in a sense the forerunner of many romantic piano miniatures, by Schubert, Chopin, Mendelssohn and other composers
the accentuated sensitivity of this paragraph dictates a freer form in which harmony is the driver of development

the playful atmosphere, the three-hour measure, and the tempo suggest that this movement is actually scherzo
-
after a short scherz, which, like a bridge, connects the 1st movement with the last, the stormy ending comes to life in the ideas of turbulent passion and mental restlessness
-
-
- repetition of cresc. and decresc.
- new ch. types: class. sonata, symphony and string quartet
-
-
-
- spirituality, depth, suffering
- expansion of the orchestra
