Obstacles to communication
Suffered from
Ethnocentrism
: this is the most common obstable when a group of people are part of the same culture. They prefer to stick to their culuture instead of discovering one. It can also be a behaviour coming from a group effect. I suffered from it but I can also say that I have been part of this obstacle
Lack of openess
: if someone is not open-minded, it is very hard to communication with this person.
Stereotypes
: There are some stereotypes from my country (Switzerland) that I suffered from: Rich, bankers, slow, reserved, too neutral (without opinion), etc. These stereotypes can make communication harder because people make directly an image of your personality even if it's wrong.
Problems of communication
Cultural differences: Differences in decision-making, communication, attitudes toward conflict, approaches to complete a task, etc.
Use of language: using slang, another language or a mix of language avoid good communication
Status: The statut of a person can put a distance between 2 persons. It can be fear, differences, etc.
Non-verbal communication: gestures, body-language, active listening that can be interpreted in a wrong or in a misunderstand way
Attitude: emotions can make the communication harder such as stress, bad mood, etc.
Some notions
Unawareness: The fact of not knowing, understanding, or realizing something
Etnocentric attitude: Expressing the belief that one's own ethnic group or one's own culture is superior to other ethnic groups or cultures, and that one's cultural standards can be applied
Racialization: To differentiate or categorize according to race. It is very often an open door to stigmatization / discrimination and stereotyping.
Lack of openess: When it's hard to accept new ideas, methods, or changes openness to change
Shortsightedness: Lack of imagination or foresight.
Communication pattern: the way, the strategy, the model followed to communicate.
Secure efficient communication
Open-mindedness: one of the most important for me. We have to be aware that every culture is different and respect them.
Active listening: the best way to understand people is to listen to them.
Non-verbal communication: gestures, body-language, active listening are non-verbal communication and can be seen by the interlocutor
Asking questions: it shows interest to the person and facilitate the communication
Self awareness: know how your thoughts, emotions and behaviours affect others and you're able to manage yourself so that the other person is an important part of the conversation
Avoid hand gestures
:
In Vietnam crossing your index and middle fingers won't bring you good luck. This human gesture symbolizes a part of the female anatomy and could get really offending when flashed to somebody.
in Spain Italy, Portugal, Brazil, and Colombia, it means that your wife is sleeping with someone else
In Philippines, it is used for calling dogs and considered very offensive. And in Singapore and Japan, that same gesture indicates death.
Turkey, Brazil and Venezuela, the gesture is a vulgar slang that can offend anyone to whom you show it.
in Afghanistan, Iran, parts of Italy, and Greece, it means "up yours" (rude reply to someone who has annoyed or angered someone else)
In United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand is equivalent of giving someone a middle finger.
