Impacts of Tourism
Environmental
Positive
If tourist hotspots are managed, developed, and planned properly then there are ways it can benefit the environment as well. If people are more eco-friendly when travelling then it can have positive impacts too. People travelling to countries for their national parks and reserves can help give the money to maintain such parks in the future and also benefit the wildlife in these locations.
Negative
One major negative effect of tourism is pollution and waste. Tourists are consuming excessive water and food in their destinations as well as littering and creating waste on their tourist destinations like beaches in Thailand and Bali. For example, in Bali the water supply is getting drained too quickly by tourists which is and alarming issue. Cruise ships are also another reason for pollution in Venice as they are known to produce lots of greenhouse gases.
Economical
Positive
The positive impacts of tourism economically is that tourism can benefit the local or national government's revenue which they would use for other things. There are two ways that tourists are contributing. One is direct contribution, which is when the government gets money from taxes on incomes of tourism employment as well as tourism companies and such things like departure tax. Indirect contributions are when tourists buy goods and services which are not related to the tourism industry, like supermarkets for example.
Negative
One Negative factor is the rising prices because of short-term rentals like Airbnb. This app is where people share their homes with tourists, so they can rent it out. This has grown extremely fast with over 5 million homes in 81,000 cities. These are raising house prices for local tenants in many of the cities. Some villagers are also being evicted so beach resorts can be built, this is the case in Cambodia.
Social
Positive
Though this may seem conterintuitive, sometimes tourism can preserve the local culture if it is manage properly. Since many people want to travel to learn about new cultures, many organizations and governments make great efforts in order preserve the culture and make sure that the culture is not diluted by too many tourists.
Negative
Overcrowding is having an issue because it is affecting the local's daily lifestyle. Overcrowding can increase traffic and have effects on footpaths and queues. This is also a social factor because overcrowding is also affecting the cities identity and culture. An example of overcrowding in cities is Venice. In Venice, over 60,000 locals are met with 30 million visitors a year, which 76,000 tourists a day. As you can see there are more tourists in Venice than the locals themselves.
Political
Positive
One Positive Factor is that many Governments are placing policies, rules, and fines against issues like littering, excessive consumption of alcohol and placing restrictions on many places. This is a good thing because it can solve the many negative environmental and social factors that tourism hotspots are facing.
Negative
Political instablilty might impact tourism in a place because people will not be willing to go to a place where there is civil unrest. So this is a negative politcal factor. One example could be Ukraine which does not have many tourists because of its political unstability.
