3.Assemblyman P. Christopher Tully (Lodi)

My Position
I believe that the United States should celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.
Argument #1
Christopher Columbas didn't find America. He had found the Bahamas. Why do we have a holiday named after a man that never stepped on Americans soil.

-On, October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbas hits landfall in the Bahamas.
-He never hit The United States even though there is a US federal holiday named after him.
-"On October 12, the ships made landfall—not in the East Indies, as Columbus assumed, but on one of the Bahamian islands, likely San Salvador."
-"Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola." "He also explored the Central and South American coasts." "But he didn’t reach North America, which, of course, was already inhabited by Native Americans, and he never thought he had found a new continent."
Argument #2
Christopher Columbus had conducted large slave trades. Is this the person we want a federal holiday named after? He had completely wiped the Taino tribe.
--Taino tribe
--"When Columbus first arrived in Haiti, there were over five million members of the Taino tribe." "A mere two years later, there were only two million." "By the time he left 20 years later, there were only 100,000." "By 1542, due to Columbus’s cohorts, there remained only 200 members of the Taino. Although, not all of the removed were murdered; over a million were taken as slaves and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean."
--His group now included a large number of indigenous people the Europeans had enslaved.

Counterargument
You may also say that Christopher Columbus was the reason we found America and that's the reason we celebrate Columbus Day. That is not true to it's fullest extent. Christopher Columbus is not the whole reason why we discovered America. There were already millions of Native American's living in America. Christopher Columbas had sparked an era of exploration. Also the true reason why Columba's day was created was to welcome Italian American's that were judged among other people in America. Now when there is no judgment, there is no point to celebrate Columba's day.
--"Columbus Day originated in the United States primarily as a way for Italian American immigrants (Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy) to celebrate their status in their new land."
--"As Italian Americans are no longer subjected to the significant prejudice that marked their arrival here last century, we could abolish Columbus Day celebrations entirely and most people would not terribly miss them."
-- "He opened the door to further discovery by explorers like Magellan, Cooke, Drake and Hudson." "His discovery led to the creation of the greatest nation on Earth, the United States of America."

Conclusion: As you see how Columba's day should not be celebrated not only because of Christopher Columbus and his past but what the holiday actually represents. We should use Columba's day as a holiday where we celebrate America's past and Indigenous Peoples
