Ways of creating a 'fold away desk'
Hinged
How it would work
At the side or the front, there would be a panel that hinged up, creating a flat surface. A support would then also hinge out, allowing the surface to rest on it, creating the desk
Where the panel would be
Front
Pros:
The size is only restricted by the width and height of the bookcase, both of which would be big enough to have a reasonable area
Cons:
While folding the desk away, you would not be able to access the books behind the panel
Side
Pros:
Doesn't restrict access to the books
Cons:
Size is restricted by the depth of the bookcase, the desk would have a small working area
Overall review of method
Sliding
Example
How it would work
Underneath one of the shelves, there would be a sliding panel which would pull out, and up so it is level to the shelf creating a work area. The sliding area could be multiple layers thick, creating a larger working area.
