Perspectives
In a language learning process, students are learning new things (vocabulary and grammar) constantly. So they need to be able to "recycle" their knowledge and to discern what contents can be useful for that moment and what contents we can cast aside for later stages.
Students need to develop critical and inquiring skills in order to distinguish properly the information provided by the language itself. It is not about understanding as much information as we can, but getting what linguistic mechanisms and resources are used to convey significant ideas.
Teaching strategies
Communicative approach - Debate, opinion construction and defence. How am I going to explain myself? What kind of reasons can I give as evidence? How can I defend my points? How can I structure my words?
-
Reflection - individual analysis on the Prescribed Title. How can apply this to language learning? What elements can we need in a first step to communicate ourselves?
Explanation - Real, logical and coherent justifications. Why am I giving these reasons? Did I consider others? What is making me think this way? By making these questions to themselves, students can develop their inquiring and thinking skills.
Thinking skills
Analysis: What words am I learning, how am I learning them and how are they linked to the subject?
Evaluation: How can I check if I am using the right processes to catalogue knowledge. Am I discarding useful information or am I accumulating useless contents? Vocabulary selection
Synthesis: All the vocabulary that I am learning, how can I summarise or classify it so it can help in my learning process?
Reflection: How can I use this recycling process in order to improve my language learning process? Am I acquiring contents properly or not?
