fish can extract more oxygen from water when the blood flows in the opersite direction
their gills can not be used in air because they lack the structural support
the gill provide a large surface area for gas exchange

insects
small tubes are used to exchange gasses
they run from external openings known as spiracles
the spiracles lead to tubes known as tracheae that are kept open by rings of connective tissue
atmospheric air passes into the insect by diffusion
oxygen dissolves in the fluid lining of the tubules and reaches the cells inside solution
birds
snakes
lizards
turtles
