Pre-Assessment for Differentiation:
The 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Differentiation strategy: Students use a computer program to read an interactive story in German that frequently uses the past tense. Students may choose to read a story about a crime, read a fairy tale, or listen to the telling of a historical event.
Assessments for tracking students throughout the unit:

Quiz to check comprehension of a short story
Skits made with other students
The 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Differentiation strategy: Students work in a small group with their teacher. Teacher has physical placards of English sentences. Students identify the verbs in the sentences and their tenses. Once teacher has ascertained that all students know what a verb is and what the past tense is, students move on to viewing German equivalents of the placards.
Assessments for tracking students throughout the unit:
Ja/Nein Karten (Yes/No Cards)
Quiz with fill-in-the-blank sentences where verbs need to be filled in
At end: Skit made with other students
The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Differentiation strategy: Students work in pairs to put together a story. Students are given sets of nouns and adjectives from previous lessons as well as verbs in the past tense to use to create their story.
