Cinematography
the films first section opens to a bright palette of earthy and health looking colours. this represents the nostalgia and easiness of the favela in these times. this was before crime was such a common occurance and the drugs were much lower grade
this time is the golden age of the favela where it was ruled by the OGs and everyone within the favela seemed to work to help each other rather than destroy each other. the OGs being clipper, `shaggy and Goose
as the film progresses towards the 70s we see the film become much more unnatural as we get into the new tightly packed and unorganized favela. this also represents the films new feel and up and coming energy.
In this period we see one of the most important scenes in the film, 'the story of the apartment'. in this scene we see the apartment of Delia. who used to sell drugs in return of sexual favours. this then turns over hands as she is dragged out of the apartment. the apartment becomes more down at heel after then as it is occupied by different hoodlums.
as the film reaches its third section of the late 70s. the film becomes much darker and uses a lot more night based sequences. this is to represent the dark turn in the plot and the horror that awaits many of our characters.
the colour palate and focus can become somewhat surreal and hard to watch in some of lil ze's scenes. this can make it seem somewhat unwelcoming.

similar to pan's labyrinth as it i also a story of someone trapped somewhere they don't want to be and the nature of human highrackie
Sound
this film used both diegetic and nondiegetic sound. from its musical score that uses traditional brazilian instruments to its explosive sound effects like gunfire.
the music from this film is generally very tradition and nondiegetic. however there is music played in the film by the characters. this music is more mainstream and american. an example of this is james brown's get on up at Benny's leaving party.
another use of non diegetic sound in this film is voiceovers. narrated by our main character and protagonist, Rocket this is used in the introduction to the 60s and the story of the apartment and more, this is effective as it makes the story easier to understand in a shorter space of time
also in this film there is very impressive and uncomfortably loud sound effects such as gun fire. this is effective as it immerses the viewer into the world they are viewing.
in the opening scene of city of god some of the sounds are pleonastic, over exaggerated for effect. for example.

Editing
City of god uses predominantly hidden cuts and continuity editing. this is a very mainstream hollywood way of making a film however it does allow for some artistic choices which may not be allowed in a big budget hollywood production.
the use of editing in the story of the apartment is effective as it allows us to focus on the high intensity action in the scene and not to get distracted by cuts. we can also focus the changes in the cinematography.
the use of a 360 degree rotation around Rocket with a cut half way brings us back to his childhood. this is effective as it gives us a sense of nostalgia and we can imagine ourselves in rockets head as he is the main narrator.
another trademark of mierles in this film is his use of hard artistic cuts trapped in movement. examples of thes are at the end of the 60s and the one i mentioned earlier to bring us into the 60s.
