Gombrich Chapter 34 Analysis
Bad Treatment to Peasants and Third Estate Members
Peasants in France are being over worked
The peasants in France were considered much less than pretty much anybody
They were to be managed, judged, and punished by their owners in the way that the owners pleased
Since they are considered less than anybody, they are the ones who do the dirty and hard work all day
Not only this, but even the King, Louis XV, would authorize imprisonment of peasants, torture, and much more.
Members of the extremely poor Third Estate are forced to pay a very large amount of taxes
The Members of the Third Estate suffer from very bad conditions of life, with almost no money and therefore almost no food.
Apart from this, outrageously, the members of this Estate were to pay a much larger amount of taxes than the members of the other wealthier states.
Finally, the Third Estate's opinion was not granted, since they had little power in vote and opinion towards the authorities' opinions.
An Irresponsible Royalty
Marie Antoinette (Maria Theresa's daughter), at the age of fourteen, is to offered to marry the King, which, gladly, she does
After this marriage, the royalty gets to business immediately, the life at the palace becomes yet more disorganized, with plays throughout the day as an example
Life at the palace went on like this for 12 more years, with these new comforts in the for the royalty, there came many expenses, leading to a very bad economic situation in France
Even after being warned many times, the French wealthy people and royalty kept on going on like this, unaware of the spark of the revolution, which would soon turn into a wild-fire
Finally noticing the flaw in his management of France, King Louis called a meeting with all the estates to consult the decision that was to be made
In the meeting, however, the consultors came to a very good and economical decision, which, of course, the King wasn't please to hear
This lead to the decision to kick the consultors out of the debate room, even if they protested; the King was officially getting himself into a revolution
Protests Around France
The Storming of Bastille
The people of France all traveled to Bastille, and there they Freed many of the prisoners, who were actually innocent
This storm of the mob caused the rise of a good deal of protests, in which people got the ideals of France, yelling: "Death to the Aristocrats! Liberty! Equality! Fraternity!"
The protests later evolved to the religious context, in which people declared Christianity as an ancient superstition
Apart from this, even women were involved; due to the lack of good leadership, the economy had collapsed, amongst the price of bread and other foods
These women protested in the streets, making loud noises with cooking instruments, and marching through the streets of Paris
The Nobility is Ruined
The enemies of the French, the Nobles, were endangered; with the protests, they would be killed
After a lot of struggle, these flee France, taking their families with them, for they were of the old age, and a new age had come
Royalty: Once a Blaze of Light
The Royalty notices that there is loss, which causes the need of help and support.
Therefore, the King calls for help of other countries and Kings
Yet, the other royals have no respect for the King of France anymore, and so, they turn their backs on him, leaving him no choice; the royalty is out of France, the revolution has won!
