Formative
Definition: Is the process of gathering evidence of student learning to provide feedback to see if adjustments to instruction strategies are needed to enhance achievement.
Exit Slips: this can multiple choice or short answer to test students knowledge of that day lesson.
Round Robin Charts: this strategy involves passing charts among groups to assess understanding. Each group records an open-ended question. They can share at the end of class or turn in the poster at the end of class.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: interim/Benchmark assessments are used to test where students are at in a particular time in the semester. It can show teachers and students what they are doing well and what they need to improve on.
STAAR: Texas standardized test that's given to certain grade level to see if they are ready to move on to the next grade.
TSI: tests students readiness for college and covers a variety of knowledge.
Diagnostic
Definition: is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students individual strengths, weaknesses, skills and prior knowledge to instruction.
KWL Charts: students write down what they already know. What they want to know more about. Then what they learned from the lesson.
Pre-Tests: tests students knowledge before they begin an activity so the teacher knows what the students strengths and weaknesses are.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used at an end of unit, semester, or year. The deal with a large chunk of learning and are usually high stakes.
Finals/Mid-Terms: assessments given at the end of the semester or year to test knowledge learned.
Chapter tests: tests knowledge over a certain chapter and looks to see at information retained and knowledge retained.
Performance
Definition : A performance assessment is an alternative or authentic assessment that requires students to perform a task rather than select answer from a traditional test.
Portfolios: students create and collect information over a period time into a organized folder.
World Café: Students work in groups and create a psoter to present to the class.
