Formative
Definition: a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. This assessment usually has very little, if any impact on grades.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: given periodically throughout a school year to establish baseline achievement data and measure progress toward a standard or set of academic standards and goals.
Placement Test: Usually given at the beginning of the year to help teachers know where the student stands with the content.

Summative
Definition: used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period. This assessment has a visible impact on grades.
Test/Exam: Allows the teacher to check for student understanding at the end of a unit/semester/school year.
Portfolio Reviews: Lets the teacher review the student's work for a whole unit/semester/school year.
Diagnostic
Definition: a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.
Discussions: Gives the teacher an opportunity to ask questions to the whole class to see what they already know.
Informal Quiz: Allows the teacher to get data from each individual student before starting instruction.
Performance
Definition: given to students that requires them to complete a task, compared to taking a regular test and answering multiple choice questions.

Portfolios: Gives students the task of keeping up with their work all year along and helps them stay organized and accountable.
