Diverse Societies In Africa
A Land of Geographic Contrast
Africa is the second largest continent in the world.
With a total 11.7 mil square miles, it occupies about one-fifth of earth's land surface.
The Rain Forrest
Natural resources
The forest uses its natural resources to make a greenhouse type effect.

It produces mahogany and teak trees up to 150 ft tall
The tsetse fly is a deadly insect found in the rainforest, after knowing this info it helped them to not use cattles or horses to fram in the forest.

Why might the rainforest be called Nature's Greenhouse?
The rainforest was called Natures's Greenhouse because the trees leaves and branches form a dense canopy that keeps sunlight from reaching the forest floor
It stretches 4,600 miles from east to west and 5,00 miles from north to south.
Savannas, are grassy plains, that include mountainous highlands and swampy tropical stretches
It covers over 40% of the continent, dry seasons alternate with rainy seasons, often 2 each year.
The topsoil throughout Africa is thin, and heavy rains strip away minerals however the savannas support abundant agricultural production.
African farmers grew watermelons, pumpkins, beans, mealies, and sorghum.

Adaptation- When they have dry seasons they have to adapt to the situation because they are not going to be able to grow as much crops because of course is dry.

Waterfalls and rapids often becoming rivers drop down to the coast from the plateau, making navigation impossible
The Sahara and the Kalahari
The sahara stretches from the Atlantic ocean to the red sea, which is about an area the size of the united states.
A small part of the Sahara consists of the sand dunes. The rest is mostly flat, gray wasteland of scattered rocks and gravel
Each year the desert takes more and more of the semiarid region at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, called the Sahel
What problems might the expansions of the Sahara cause?
It could affect the climate because the desert is a very hot place and it could make Africa even hotter. It dries up Africa even more that it already is.
Climate change- If the Sahara keeps expanding this could change the climate making it hotter because the desert is avery hot and dry place.

Migration- Because of the desert people aren't able to migrate as easily as the would usually be able to since the deserts are so dry and hot people can't just walk through them.
