Key features of a pantomime
costume
bright colours, to set the mood
some characters are played by boys, in peter pan, peter used to be played by a girl
characters that are silly e.g. wishy washy often wears the most fun costumes
In the Lion King the directors/costume makers have to be clever about how they show the audience the animal in the panto
comedy
There is often a lot of silly comedy which lighten bad situations to keep it fun for small children
one of the most common comedic situations is when the audience say 'it's behind you'
It also is a reason for why pantomimes and plays are quite different because some plays have comedy but pantomimes have more family friendly humour
the comedy is often very silly and overly dramatic
Audience interaction
The script is made so that the actors know when to include the audience in their scenes
most of the time the children are asked to shout things out
the actors in a pantomime break the fourth wall a lot because that is why it is family friendly, because they make kids feel like their in the play
This also links with comedy because the kids are asked to shout out things that can include humour
song
pantomimes include quite a few songs sometimes pop or sang by the characters, if they are pop songs they are often to keep the kids interested and so they can sing along
when the characters sing them they are often funny songs that explain to the kids what is going on in the play
at the end of a pantomime sometimes there is a song where the audience stand up and sing with them and sometimes there are cameras showing your faces
a lot of the time the songs are happy songs but if they are not they are usually comedic ones because it's very rare to find a sad song because it will upset the families watching.
dance
There is often a lot of dance going on in pantomimes and the audience get involve as well
Sometimes when they play a pop song that everyone knows they get the audience to stand up and join in
They dance also to be funny because not only do they have a certain situation going on they act it out to the music e.g. in peter pan when Tick-tock the crocodile appears they have a song that they dance to whilst avoiding the crocodile
Villains
In a pantomime there is always a bad character that wants vengeance or power which the hero or Victim will stop from happening
When the villain walks onto the stage the lights go darker and there is dramatic music playing
more often than not when they appear on stage the audience gives a very loud boo often prompted by the heroes or good characters
The villain never wins, in Peter pan Captain Hook is the villain and it doesn't end well for him.
Hero
In every pantomime there is a good character or hero that stops the disaster or villain from doing something bad and he always wins
the hero teaches the kids in the audience a lesson like 'it's alright to make mistakes' and 'Never give up on your dreams' in Peter Pan the main lesson is 'Don't be afraid to grow up'
The hero is often the main character because he does something good
Fight scene
In most pantomimes, There is very dramatic fight scene between the hero and the villain.
More often than not the fight scene is in slow motion to make it comedic and more dramatic.
This is also what makes it seem adventurous for the kids so that it is enjoyable for all personalities
