Holism and reductionism
Holism = functionality cannot be broken down into individual components. In order to understand it must look at how these components work together.

AGAINST = doesn't lend themselves to scientific testing: ideas can become vague and speculative as things become more complex
- Humanistic psychology often criticised for lack of empirical evidence.
- Higher explanation combine many different perspectives = accepting that there are many factors makes it difficult to establish the most influential and therefore which direction to go in or ex. which factor to use as a basis for therapy
- perhaps lower level explanations are more appropriate when trying to find solutions to real world problems.
cognitive approach = interactionist so less reductionist than behaviourism and biological reductionism
Reductionism = something complex can be broken down into its components to fully understand it because it is nothing more than it's separate components
Biological reductionism = behaviour reduced to the neurochemical - neurones, neurotransmitters, hormones, basic structures.
