OCD
~ Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ~
An anxiety disorder which focuses
on worrying about things (obsessions)
and reducing the anxiety related to
the worry (compulsions)
Obsessions
Persistent and recurrent thoughts that are intrusive and unwanted
Cause anxiety and fear
The individual may try to suppress their obsession or neutralise it with another thought
Compulsions
Repetitive, excessive behaviours
carried out in order to relieve
anxiety caused by an obsession
This relief from anxiety is only temporary
The OCD cycle
---> obsession ---> anxiety ---> compulsion ---> temporary relief --->
Symptoms of OCD
Checking e.g checking doors, stoves, lights
Contamination e.g shaking hands, using public phones
Hoarding e.g e.g buying and collecting excessively
Ruminations e.g dwelling on life after death or mortality
Diagnosis of OCD
Yale-Brown-Obsessive-Compulsive-Scale (Y-BOCS): semi-structured interviews to assess severity of symptoms
Strengths of Y-BOCS:
consistency of diagnosis has been demonstrated
Weaknesses of Y-BOCS:
people may give unhonest answers to questionnaires through fears of being ridiculed
giving a rating for symptoms is subjective
