Membrane Transport - Coggle Diagram
Membrane Transport
-
Passive Transport
Simple Diffusion
-
Diffusion is movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration, down the concentration gradient. In this case through the cell membrane without extra help.
Facilitated Diffusion
-
Facilitated Diffusion is the movement of molecules across the cell membrane facilitated by a transport protein; either a channel or carrier protein.
The channel proteins are mainly for polar molecules and large molecules that are unable to cross through the bilipid layer, as the bilip layer contain polar heads so if the polar molecules were to cross the bilipid layer they would get stuck and bond to the polar heads. So as a result channel proteins are used.
Aquaporin
-
Aquaporins or water channels, are channel proteins that facilitate the transport of water across the cell membrane.
