visual impairment -
PARTIALLY SIGHTED
Things to take into account by teacher
Always favor the stronger side of the student’s vision due to visual field deficits. For example, if the student only uses his left eye, he would need to sit on the right side of the classroom away from the windows. Seating facing a light source (sun, windows) should ideally be at their back.
materials
Printed materials
Bold print (avoid slanted/italic printed characters).
Large print (font size 16 and over),

Learning technology
Audio material
Assistive ICT technologies
Optical lenses
Magnifiers
Speech output
Digital book
Always use a visually impaired student’s first name when addressing them. This way they will know you are talking to them and not someone else.
Teaching method & practices
Special attention needs to be given when selecting worksheets and materials for students with visual impairment as students need to be provided with the highest quality worksheets and materials.
Integration of alternative sensory channels
Auditory
Tactile
Olfactory (sense of smell)
Use repetition in instructions and lesson given in order to get the students attention
groupwork
-to help develop sense of belonging among the class community as an inclusive classroom
Students without special needs can help their friends who are partially sighted
Give extra timing to complete the assigned tasks
Provide constructive feedback rather than judgement- can build motivation
Spread awareness in the classroom in order to prevent downgrading the partially sighted pupils.
