Biodegration
Biodegradability = ability of organic substances/materials to be broken down into simpler substances through enzymes from microorganisms. If complete, the initial organic substances are entirely converted into simple inorganic molecules such as water, carbon dioxide and methane.
The breakdown of organic matter can result in low dissolved oxygen (e.g. hypoxia or anoxia) in the water (eutrophication). Sediment oxygen demand is higher when production is higher. Algal blooms and plant growth occurs in areas with high nutrients + light.
Changes to organic matter concentrations in a wetland = eutrophication. As animals that are sensitive to low dissolved oxygen and cannot move to areas with better conditions may die.
