Respiratory emergencies
Croup: inflammation and swelling of pharynx, larynx, and trachea
signs & symptoms: stridor seal bark cough, fever.

Bronchiolitis: viral illness often caused by RSV, bronchioles become inflames, swell and fill with mucus.
S&S: shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, fever, dehydration, tachypnea, tachycardia.
treatment: appropriate oxygen therapy, transport in position of comfort.

Pneumonia: infection of the lungs, impairs lungs ability to exchange oxygen and CO2, bacterial= quickly, Viral= gradually.
S&S: can vary, rapid or labored breathing, chills, fever, cough, green red or rust colored sputum

Influenza type A: animal respiratory disease that has mutated to infect humans, like seasonal flu
S&S: fever, cough, soar throat, muscle aches, headache, fatigue

Tuberculosis(TB): bacterial infection that most often affects the lungs, can remain inactive for years
S&S: cough fever, fatigue, night sweats, weight loss
Treatment: keeps airway patent and provide oxygen of needed, wear gloves, eye protection, and N-95 respirator.
Other: found mostly in people who abuse IV drugs, alcohol, or have HIV, also prevalence is higher in homeless people, inmates and nursing home residence

Acute Pulmonary Edema: heart cant circulate blood properly, fluid builds in alveoli and in lung tissue.
S&S:sharp chest pain, sudden onset, dyspnea, tachycardia, clear breath sounds initially
Treatment: administer 100% oxygen, and suction carefully if necessary, unconscious PT may need airway adjunct.

environmental/industrial exposure: pesticides, cleaning solutions, chemicals, chlorine and other gases can be released
S&S: for Carbon monoxide pts complain of flu like symptoms, headache.
Treatment: make sure scene is safe, airway management, supply oxygen.
