Formative assessments are given formally or informally to help the teacher assess what the students know and what they don't know. The teacher then uses this knowledge and data to adjust instruction.

A performance assessment is when students actively have to pull from their knowledge base to create something that requires them to use or show that knowledge. They are then assessed on the product.
Diagnostic

HOT stands for Higher Order Thinking. Higher order thinking requires the teacher and students asking and answering questions according to the higher levels in Bloom's Taxonomy (Cain, 2018).
