Explain why it is important to create an inclusive teaching and learning environment
Because it maintains motivation and drive
Positive environments encourage positive engagements throughout the group and enable students to be motivated to succeed.
Because learner's needs must be met
Physical needs
Emotional and wellbeing
Learning styles
Basic needs
Differentiated activities
Safe and supportive learning environment
Teachers teach to a group of individuals with different experiences, abilities and needs which should be recognised and respected.
When learner's needs are acknowledged and taken into consideration, they are able to access the information at their level of understanding and ability. When a learner feels listened to and heard, they will be more adaptable and open to challenges and the work they have to do.
Because it creates a sense of community
A sense of belonging
When learners sense that their backgrounds, perspectives and identities are welcomed and valued, in class discussions, they engage more, learn more and are more likely to continue their studies.
Where all learners are equal
Involving all learners
Because the law states in the Equality Act
The Equality Act 2010 is intended to protect everyone in our society from being discriminated against because of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.
When delivering to learners it is vital to make sure their needs are met and they are able to reach their potential. This may mean adaptions to activities or deadlines are necessary
Make use of resources and materials that actively promote equality and diversity
Challenge stereotypes and prejudice
If the teaching and learning environment is not inclusive then learners become despondent, lethargic, non committal and disinterested. This in turn could have a knock on to other learners, create bad feeling and snow ball from there. Learners are less likely to enjoy their course and the teaching becomes harder and more of a challenge.
Learners will have a bad experience if the environment isn't inclusive and they don't feel included.
Inclusive classrooms reduce anxiety, improve working memory, processing issues, retention, supporting SEND and specific learning difficulties
