Caesar's Friends and Enemies
Friends
Antony
Caesar's right hand man
He was in the Senate, helping Caesar get what he wants
Vetoed laws that would cause trouble for him
Crassus
3rd man in the Triumvirate
He provided Caesar the finance he needed, he is that rich
Caesar got the popularity, so supporting him is good
When Caesar became the consul, he supported Crassus by passing a law that benefits him - tax rebate
Clodius
One of Caesar's men
He removed Caesar's opposition Cato and Cicero by exiling and jailing them
But he was the reason for the First Triumvirate to collapse for the first time
He tried to assassinate Pompey with his gangs, but Pompey blamed Crassus for it
Enemies
Pompey
He became relatively close to Caesar during the First Triumvirate
Due to their personal amicitia of him marrying Julia
They were connected by their political aims:
Caesar had patrician heritage, oratorical skills, and political presence at Rome
Pompey had military power and popularity combined
But in the end, Pompey sided with the Optimates and agreed to lead the Senate ang go against Caesar's army.... and Civil war happened
Cato
He hated Caesar to the bone that his hatred resulted to the civil war
Even when everyone in the Senate wanted peace (agreeing with Senate's deal of relinquishing his powers as long as Pompey do the same), Cato refused because he wanted Caesar to be utterly destroyed
Instead, he made Pompey go against Caesar = civil war
Crassus
Mixed
Caesar asked him to be in the Triumvirate but he refused
But despite this, during the civil war he kept asking for his alliance
But he joined with Pompey
Caesar pardoned him still
Apparently they shared interest in literature and oratorical skills
But he turned a blind eyes during his assassination
