10 writing wrongs in high schools
Grammar instruction is ineffective or ignored
Teaching grammar is not balanced - teachers just teach the rules without any practice in real-life situation
Grammar should be taught in three ways
separeted, simulated and integrated instruction
Students are not doing enough writing
To become expert one must practice a lot
To write more proficiently, students have to write more
Writing is assigned rather than taught
Not enough proper instruction within the class
Giving a lot of writing tasks is not enough, students have to be taught how to write
It's easy to assign writing tasks instead of teaching the same skill
Below-grade-level writers are asked to write less than others instead of more than others
Expectations are lowered, instead of increased of these students
They need twice as much writing instruction/assigments not the other way around
-they will never catch up
Writing topics are often chosen with litte thought about the prior knowledge and interests of the students
Students must find writing assignments meaningful and relavant
Standard must be high and challenging
Some teachers have little or no knowledge of district and state writing standards
They cannot adapt their teaching to the standards which are needed
Stick blindly to the textbook examples of writing assignments
Students are not given enough timed writing instruction or practice
In real world writing is needed on demand
Time preassure makes students do poorly
People usually write something which is not timed (multi layered essay)
English language learners are often short charged as well
People are not given a lot of authentic texts
the expectations are the same and low
Student's skills stagnate
Teachers need help assessing student writing
Teachers are doing too much of the work, students are not doing enough work
