Assessments
-
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to help the teacher guide instruction. These assessments are usually not taken for a grade as the teacher is merely assessing students to modify instructions to help the students achieve.
Entry slip: Have students write down 1 thing they learned from the day before, and 1 thing they still have a question on.
Low-stakes quizzes: This will allow the teacher to see what the students know and adjust instruction accordingly.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used at the end of a unit to see what the students learned. At this point, the teacher has already given all instruction on the given topic, so this assessment is taken as a grade for a large percentage.
Project: Assessment given to students to see what they learned during the unit about a specific topic.
-
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is a form of a pre-assessment that allows the teacher to understand the student's strengths and weaknesses. This allows further instruction in the classroom to be planned around the results of the assessment.

Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is a form of testing that has an individual perform a task rather than answer questions on a piece of paper.
Memorization: Have students memorize something for class (such as the Texas Pledge) and have them verbally repeat it back.
Debate: After learning about a new topic, have students argue sides by using their knowledge about the subject.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This assessment allows teachers to understand how their students are progressing in their learning, and helps teachers determine if the student will perform well on later assessments.
