**What Causes Globalization?
Labor Availability-
Workers are np longer confined to their geographic location for work due to migration. Migrant workers travel to different countries to work in different capacities. This can bring economic benefits to the workers but can also present challenges in terms of working conditions. Workers in poorer countries can be used by international companies to reduce costs. Building a factory in a poorer country can be significantly more economically beneficial in terms of profits.
Naren
: Moving factories to developing countries could benefit the company. Developing countries offers cheaper workers which could increase the profit. Moreover, it could benefit the country as there will be more foreign company investing in the country
Kimberly: A negative side to this is labour laws and human rights. People can be taken advantage of and could be underpaid because they are unaware.
excellent point. How can we protect these workers when each nation has a different view on labor rights?
Provides new opportunities for people in otherwise developing countries
How so?
Mark: Makes an easier access to labor worker which provides a opportunity to have huge construction projects
true, but labor mobility also allows workers to move around to find the best possible wages for their services.
Rose
: The immigration/emmigration of workers can also help to diversify a community by allowing people of various cultural backgrounds to mix and share skills
is this a good or bad thing?
Rose
: I guess it can be both good and bad. The good thing about it is that it promotes integration of communities but I guess it can also be bad because it could "flush out" the local community; thus, making it more difficult for people to find their own identity/individuality
Wildan: provides opportunities for people who might be struggling to find jobs in their area.
Trade
- Many countries have trading agreements that allow for the exchange of goods with relative ease. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an organizational organization that plays an important role in improving global trade conditions.
Naren
: Countries that are dependent on their domestic consumer/market could be affected by imported goods. This causes the government to employ taxes/fees to protect domestic markets
Are these taxes removing people's purchasing freedom and infringing on their rights?
Rose
: I agree with this. The domestic market could struggle because it has to compete with such a range of goods/services that are outisde of their control (for instance they could easily compete with a next door neighbour's service but it would be hard compared to an international service?)
Akram: Easier access to a wide range of products that is not available within certain countries/regions. Build relations between countries
I very much agree!
a major benefit to consumers, more variety equals greater choice and more competition equals lower prices. How does this impact local producers though?
Who does the WTO's trade policies benefit?
Malaika
: Most trade policies created by the WTO benefit rich countries and multinational corporations. They have more wealth than smaller countries so they have more negotiation power. This allows them to them negotiate to change trade laws to their advantage and often harms the needs of smaller countries.
Julia: Trade creates more relationships between countries, this makes things like tourism and diversity more abundant. Things like culture and ideals are also spread more easily.
these relationships, are they co-dependent or can they be used politically?
Wildan: Trade can help introduce new products and influence countries to innovate new things however it could also increase traffic (air, water, land traffic)
Developments in Transport
- Developments like High-speed rail, cargo shipping and flight mean that people and goods can travel much more quickly around the world.
Samuel
: The faster the product delivery, the more sales could be made. this causes a faster growth and expansion for said company*
Agree
Good, but does the additional cost offset the benefits of speed?
Naufal
: Providing aid to countries and transporting patients would be faster and more efficient.
Very nice
DAMN! very thoughtful thought, completely agree!
Language!
insightful thought, but is this really a concern for most nations?
Kimberly: Development in transport can correlate with an increase in tourism; For some countries like Greece this is its main source of money.
are there risks in being overly dependent on tourism or on transportation as a source of national income?
Malaika:
Social change, unrest or opinions about a nation can create a massive drop in tourism quickly. With tourism as a source of national income, a country could struggle if this does happen and it leaves their economic future very vulnerable
Akram
: With transportation being much more accessible by anyone, traveling is not as hard as it used to. Tourism now is much more popular than it was before. Not only people, but goods can be transported around the world much quicker
what are the potential benefits of greater accessibility to travel options?
Yes, transportation has definitely made travelling much easier and quicker. There are transportations like airplanes, and much more that enables us to go to a lot of different places.
are there any side effects of this development?
Rose
: I agree with the fact that transportation is much easier nowadays but a) do some countries want to be explored/visited? Some remote islands are home to civilisations that are isolated from the modern world, they are also hard to get to for a reason, maybe they do not want to integrate with other communities. If so, is that bad? and b) ease of transportation could also mean that diseases are much more easily spread
Communications
- The increased speed and versatility of internet technology has allowed for far greater and effective connectivity between people across the globe. In addition, the use of mobile technology and wearable technology is ever-increasing this process and affecting our working and social lives.
NATASHA: It allows diversity, remove cultural barriers, it also allows humans to communicate no matter if they speak the language or not. It also helps when talking about the earth for example the environment.
when you say "remove cultural barriers" what do you mean exactly?
Amy: I agree. People can meet people from different countries through internet. By communicating with people who are far away from you and living with a whole different culture, you can understand more about the world without actually living in different regions.
in an online experience as meaningful as a real-life experience?
Amy: Of course there are some limitations when experiencing things online only. But I think it is still meaningful as not many people are able to experience different cultures in real life.
Kimberly: Due to communications and effectivity in technology, crime is difficult to commit due to said technology. This is from people's social media presence, recording cameras and security, etc
Yes I agree! With the increase of technology and communications, the security is much tighter and might also increase safety.
or are simply crimes harder to commit but much larger scale crimes are much easier? Hacking, data breaches, information leaks all cost the world billions of dollars each year. The problem is that as soon as new tech arises to deal with it, criminals have already found a work around to bypass it
Erica
:Communications has definitely increases the ability to communicate with people around the world. There are more apps online that are safer to use and still able to communicate like Zoom, and more. Communicating across the world is much more effective and convenient which might help with doing business too.
Yes! Definitely agree with this statement
Rose
: I agree with this statement but isn't it ironic how even though technology has allowed humans to communicate faster and more efficiently, we have managed to further isolate ourselves by being addicted to media?
Technology has removed the "personal contact" aspect of communication from the equation in many respects
Yes I agree with this. It definitely helps communicating online with people across the globe but also makes us grow further with people who are physically with you.
I agree to a certain extent however I honestly do not think that media forces to isolate ourselves even further through addiction. A large chunk of social media involves the interaction of others and it is dynamic with the environment (For example, you message somebody through social media to meet up in real life)
it's much easier to maintain contact with people from around the globe and advances in video conferencing allows you to actually see the people you are meeting with rather than just talking to them. This is helpful in reading non-verbal communication cues.
Femke: The con of having advanced technology would be the lack of human and social interaction, but again, it is an effective way of spreading taking and exchanging information no matter the distance.
when you say "lack of human and social interaction" what do you mean?
Wildan: As technology develops it could also bring the costs up and also have the chance to replace and automate jobs that could've done by humans
Are there any other factors that might impact how people view globalization? Entertainment? Education? Food?
Silvana: There are actually many factors that may affect how people view globalization. Stereotypes in entertainment/media may be a well known understanding of different cultures. Food may also be an impact in terms of discovering new flavours from different regions and implementing it into other cultures.
