Explain how the study of plate tectonics helps to explain the distribution of fold mountains around the world.
Intro: Define Plate tectonic
-> Earths crust divided into 14 plates... float on semi molten in upper mantle (asthenosphere)
-
-
=>Hot magma rises from the core
hits lithosphere cools.. moves horizontally
=> Cooled magma drops towards the core, only to push hotter magma up...restating cycle
Ocean to Continental
-
-
Continental crust lighter...heavier oceanic crust subducts. Oceanic made of basalt (silica and magnesium)...continental (aluminum and silicon)=> forms ocean trench
Continental-Continental
Little subduction as both plates are thick
=> intense pressure causes upward buckling and plate fracturing
=> forms fold Mnt,
-
Examples of folding
-
Armorican
-
The collision caused compression from the south, causing the layers of sedimentary
rock (limestone and sandstone) to be buckled into huge folds
-
The mountain ranges run in an
East-West alignment in the province of Munster
seen in ridge and valley landscape of muster
