5 roles of the school:
Academic Achievement: A focus on test scores
Social Development: given opportunities for students to develop social skills by working with peers.
Workforce Readiness: a focus on getting students prepared for jobs.

Types of Schools
VOUCHERS: not yet legal in MO, used in 14 states and DC, an amount of money issued by tac funds that would follow a student to public, private, charter, or magnet schools.
PRIVATE: IN Mo- 105,346 students or 11.50% of school age children, were enrolled in 579 private schools
CHARTER SCHOOLS: publicly funded but ran independently; uses alternative methods. Admits any applicants until they reach capacity. Also often a lottery system.
HOMESCHOOLING: the new reports conclude that approximately 1,770,000 students are home schooled in the UNited States and that is 3.4% of the school-age population.
MAGNET SCHOOLS: selective acceptance, public schools with special curriculum
VIRTUAL SCHOOLING: meeting for the classroom in a home setting.
The different types of areas:
RURAL: 21% of the population live in rural areas. 14% of rural populations live in poverty.
SUBURBAN: 50% of population are suburban and these areas have became more diverse. Poverty still exists here and these areas out perform rural and urban students on achievement tests.
URBAN: rich in libraries, museums, theaters. Greater Diversity. 1in 5 residents are foreign-born. Large groups between wealthy and the poor and magnet and charter schools are very popular.

Cultural Transmission: responsibility of transmitting culture into the classroom in order to maintain it and pass it on for the next generation.
